The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is implementing new rules regarding the use of testimonials in advertising.
The key takeaway is this: You can no longer just highlight the most positive and successful testimonials. You must also disclose what the typical or average experience is for your customers.
This change has raised concerns for some people.
- When we receive glowing success stories from customers, we do ask for their permission to share them on our website. We use online services to assist us capture those testimonials. However, when we receive complaints or negative feedback, we don’t ask for permission to share those, and we don’t post them.
- When past customers tell us their before and after experiences, which may or may not include changes in their income, we do not validate these claims with their bank or ask them to provide income statements.
- We do not regularly conduct statistically significant, formal surveys to determine the average increase in business for all customers, so we can’t provide a precise average result. Top 1%: This elite group is committed to mastery. They strive to be the best in their field, deeply understanding their customers and continuously improving their business. They achieve extraordinary results, but even for them, success isn’t guaranteed. Life, their effort, timing and market conditions can still impact their outcomes negatively as well as positively.
